Lavender fields on Hvar: where and when
Hillsides above the sea, with a long growing tradition.
The slopes around Velo Grablje and Brusje have grown lavender for a long time. Terraces, dry stone walls and old paths shape the landscape. Not every plot you see is open to visitors or meant as a photo field, so keep to public paths and ask before you enter private land.
Late June to early July is a favourable window along the old road near Brusje and Velo Grablje. That is a seasonal guide and no promise for a given date, as the bloom shifts from year to year. To fit the hills into a day with the coast, see Hvar tours.
Velo Grablje and Brusje
The two villages that anchor the lavender hills.
Velo Grablje
This village has grown lavender systematically for more than a century. Today the tradition is passed on through harvest and distillation events.
Brusje
Brusje sits on the same upland, with terraces and old routes between the villages. Walking is the best way to see the fields. Take water and sun protection, as there is little shade.
Our pick: honey, lavender and bee farm visit
This farm visit in Brusje shows lavender country and traditional farming. Lavender blooms only in early summer, so ask what you will see on your date.

Festival Levande
A lavender festival in and around Velo Grablje.
The 18th Festival Levande ran in 2026. The calendar header shows 3 to 4 July, and the full programme covered 2 to 4 July, with an opening in Hvar Town and events in Velo Grablje. Two items were a lavender harvest above Velo Grablje on 3 July from 09:30 to 10:30, and a distillation demonstration on 4 July from 14:00 to 17:00.
Check the festival programme for the year you visit before you plan around it. Some events may ask you to register. A festival date does not promise full bloom either.
Visiting the lavender hills
Practical points.
Getting there
The villages lie inland from Hvar Town. A car gives the most freedom, and details on roads and parking are on car hire on Hvar.
Respect the land
The fields are working farmland. Keep out of rows and terraces that are not marked for visitors, and do not pick plants.
Combine with the coast
The hills pair well with a stop in Hvar old town or a swim on one of the island beaches.
What to bring and when to go
The hills are exposed and the paths are old.
Heat
July is the hottest month in the historic Hvar climate table, with a mean daily maximum of 29.2 °C (1961 to 1990). Go early or late in the day, and carry water.
Footwear
Old paths and terraces are uneven and stony. Wear closed shoes with grip, not beach sandals.
Time
Allow a half day for the hills, including the drive from the coast. See Hvar weather by month for the wider season.
